What’s your car’s name? And why?

We have three. Sylvia the 6, Chip the CX-5, and Rizzo the S-10.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Sylvia (not to be confused with the Nissan Silvia) is named that because I needed an “S” name to go with “6.” Sylvia the 6. And my favorite one-hit wonder of the country charts in the ‘80s is named Sylvia.

Chip the CX-5 is driven by my wife and is named that after Chip Gaines from “Fixer Upper.”

The S-10 is named “Rizzo” because of Grease. Pink lady, pink truck.

My 3rd gen Prelude is named Lucky, because at one point it was saved from the junkyard. My 5th gen Prelude is named Cosima because at the time I did the engine swap in it I was watching a lot of Orphan Black and thought that was a cool name. I haven’t named the TSX yet, nor did I ever name my recently departed 4th gen Prelude.

My 2005 Legacy GT is the “Scaredy cat”. (though I don’t use that name much.)

It’s black, hisses when the turbo spools, and as everyone knows, cats are AWD.

I named my Land Rover “Percival” after Terry-Thomas’ character in Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines, “Sir Percy Ware Armitage”. Primitive, sort of classy, but an unreliable bounder.

My Galaxie was named Agnes after a penguin on a sweater. I think the sweater had two penguins and they were both named... I don’t know, I don’t own the sweater.

The Lincoln is the Big Bright Green Pleasure Machine, after a Simon & Garfunkel song.

The SV10 Camry I had until recently is the only car I’ve ever named, due simply to it being an old, beat-up Toyota. I didn’t give it a single name, though, instead calling it various combinations of “Toyo-” + word + “-er”, e.g. Toyojunker, Toyobeater, Toyostinker, etc. Also Toyomobile, because why not.

Infiniti.

At least that’s what it says on the back of the car.

I don’t name my cars. I enjoy them thoroughly, but they’re still a combination of metal, plastic, fibers, glass, leather, and rubber at the end of the day.

That’s cool. To be fair, I don’t refer to our cars by their “names.” They just have them. The S10 is “the truck”, the CX-5 is “your car” (when talking to my wife) and the 6 is “my car.”

My focus ST’s name is the banana express because it is bright yellow and fast.

And my Kawasaki KLR’s name is SOFIA. She’s named after the main character tank in the old NES game Blaster Master. Because she’s tough as nails and the name makes the backronym “Something Otherworldly; Favored In an Apocalypse”.

I don’t usually name my cars, but jokingly called my new truck “Yoshi” which my wife loved so it’s now getting “YOSH1" vanity plates. Why Yoshi?

A. Yoshi is Mario’s ride

B. My truck is a monster/dinosaur since it’s both huge (crew cab long bed dually) and a bit of a dinosaur being one of the last of the “no replacement for displacement” era (454 under the hood)

Cashmere (color and being my Lead-footed Zeppelin).

Baloo (pun on color and it turned out to be a very bear-able companion).

Foxy Grandpa / The O.G.  (because I’m weirdly attracted to that old man car. Plus it’s ironically gangsta, much like myself).

I found a business card for someone named “Christine” in my Acura Integra. Didn’t stop it from getting stolen, but a Honda Civic matching the one skulking around my neighborhood around the time my car was stolen was itself found a few days later with its occupants gunned down in an unsolved drive-by...

S3 = Little Beastie
BRZ = Breezie
Rogue (wife’s) = Roguie

Neither the Rogue or BRZ were terribly original. The S3 got the LB moniker because it’s not a particularly good-looking car - it’s short, squat and a little muscular, and has the ability to go like snot if it wants to. Little Beastie seemed fitting.

My 2013 Ford Escape is named Mattie after Matt Hardigree who gave a review of it. I commented in that review that I was thinking about buying a new Ford Edge, but the new Escape sounded like something I might like. Matt recommended the new Escape. I bought it, and I love it!

All of the possible names were a play on the color, Copper Red Mica. First choice was Scarlet, but no minivan is sexy enough to earn that name. Then it was Mallory, like the earlier maker of Duracell batteries (you know, the copper top ones). I finally settled on Clairette, a variation of claret, sometimes just shortened to Claire.

Someone did suggest Manuela because of the transmission, but it didn’t feel quite right.

General Anarchy. 2010 Charger R/T, missing an ABS sensor so that means no traction control. I have to baby the gas pedal or the tires will lay a 007 style smoke trail behind you. Doesnt help that I’m still using the pizza cutter tires that came with it.

My S-Class has earned the name Christine because she has had so many catastrophic meltdowns which have been resolved, never to return, by a restart or not being driven for a couple days that I am convinced she fixes herself to keep me from leaving her on the side of the road.

Meepster the Jeepster. I know it’s not a Jeepster Commando but it’s the smallest Jeep and it’s 2 wheel drive with a roof that opens. Also my wife says “meep” when I boop her noes. She took that second photo on the Parkway when we went to Asheville on the 23rd

The Cherokee I’m getting in the next little while is going to be named after it gets running.

We love it. Drove all the competitors. Couldn’t figure out why so many buy the Odyssey considering the poor ergonomics, materials, and IP layout. The Kia Sedona was our second choice, but the huge center console and shifter was a let down. No space to put anything. Also, no stow-and-go (wife plays the harp and I need the seats to all disappear when we move it around) If I could do it again, I’d wait until CarPlay/Android Auto were available, and I’d spring for the advanced safety-tech package for the 360 camera and radar cruise. You had to move up to the Touring-L Plus to get the safety-tech package - I think that’s changed now to where you only need the Touring-L. I’d love HID or LED headlights too, even if just to match the light temperature of the DRL. Almost every light in the Pacifica is LED and it’s weird to have incandescent projector headlights.

Can’t say much about longevity, though. We’re leasing ours and don’t plan on keeping it. I have car buying ADD and don’t like to keep cars for too long. We’ve had this one a year and I have the itch to switch. Not because it’s a bad car, I just want to try something else. Great car though. Lots of power, transmission is smooth, and it’s a great driver. Really wish it had paddle shifters or some way to select which of the 9 gears there are. There is an “L” on the rotary shifter for engine braking, but it’s too aggressive for my liking. Sorry for the novel.

No worries about a novel, that’s kind of what I wanted! We want the hybrid, which are starting to become available, but due to their launch issues I’m considering leasing. Unfortunately the leasing company they use primarily isn’t taking the federal EV tax credit into account with the hybrids so it’s almost cheaper to buy than it is to lease! It was the other way around with the Volt - leasing was cheaper than almost any other car out there thanks to the tax credit, but I drive too many miles to lease and got in on a 0% financing offer way below MSRP, so I think I did pretty well there. Anyway, good to hear one more positive, I am looking forward to getting my hands on one!
